Grenade made in Bali? Gun shooting made in Bali? Wars made in Bali? Do you see news on TV recently that gun shooting and grenade blasting took place in Denpasar, Bali? Do you know why it happened? Don’t you know that Balinese people is very kind and sincere. Those are too many questions for a simple answer. Balinese people have extreme behavior in common. How come?
I don’t have any significant evidence based on statistic research to prove that, but I am Balinese. I never stayed in Bali until 1997. In that year, I have to do water sport business in Bali. I looked for many ways how to get fit into their community. If you are not Balinese and never stay in Bali, you won’t speak their language. Different accent than Balinese’s means foreigners, strangers, guests or not Balinese for sure. If you are guests or tourists, you will be welcomed. Because you are the clients and you are potential buyers (hotel accommodations, souvenirs, furniture and many others. Is it a prejudice? I can say, yes, it is. If you speak the same language and accent, you will have been welcomed and trusted of 80%. The rest let the time takes care of it. Moreover, if you are from the same town or village, you will have been part of the family. They will give their life if you are in trouble. But, in the contrary, they can take your life that they believe you’ve betrayed. This is not a good situation, actually. This is part of cultures, customs or habits you can say that. Do you remember the king of Pemecutan Palace in Denpasar that slaughtered his cousin because of land borders? This is not the analog of gun shooting happened, but the motives will be quiet similar. They are willing to kill each other than to kill non Balinese. It will be different if you get caught stealing things (especially Javanese and lombok people). They will punch, kick you until death and leave your body there, on the street. It is horrible, huh mite? The motives are still similar, but the tools now can vary e.g. guns, grenades, knifes or samurai. How about the police? The police will have little lower power in facing Balinese social power wrapped up in religion and ceremony. Balinese has its own civil police called Pecalang. They make sure the ceremony will held properly without any disruption. It leads to a misconception. Sometimes they feel smug and arrogant out of the religion business. This behavior may lead them to be street kids or hoodlums. They are usually in a small group. They commonly work as security in bars and night clubs. They pacify those kinds of places. So, just keep your tempered low on the streets. You won’t make any mess with them. Otherwise, someone will throw you a grenade, by chance. Peace!!!! Ardadi |
